Yo-Kai Watch is a bit like the new Pokemon for Japanese kids, complete with its extremely-popular anime series. Now that the first game is here, we can see what all the fuss is about, and I Have quite enjoyed the name. Actually, in a number of ways, I believe it's even cooler than Pokemon.
First, Yo-Kai Watch happens in our world, and your character has regular kid anxieties. You are not some pre-teen who's tossed out into the crazy world to face down dangerous creatures and train them to participate in bizarre gladiatorial combat rituals. You are a normal kid who desires to fit in with her (or his) friends and worries when her parents fight. Now, I'm not saying that all games should take place in the real world - I love fantasy and sci fi universes! Yet, I am suggesting that Pokemon games could spend a bit more time dealing with storylines that we can relate to as people. The short episodes that make up the story of Yo-Kai Watch remind me of miniature anime episodes, and that's precisely what I Have needed to see the Pokemon games do a bit more of when it comes to narratives.
What one other component of the game Niantic intends to address is the lack of explanation it gives for specific game mechanisms. Addressing especially the rings that form around a Pokemon while catching them, Hanke declares the game is not intentionally obtuse.
"It's not something that merely minted and then issued on start day and not transformed."
"I can't say we were that clever, no" Hanke said of whether the game was intended to have players work together to learn the app's intricacies. In Yo-Kai Watch you play a kid who obtains the power to see and talk to Yo Kai, colorful spirits who embody human characteristics and emotions. You can recruit a ton of them to your side by defeating them in battle, but that's pretty much where the direct similarity to a Pokemon game endings. The battle system is real time and completely different from Pokemon, and the flow of the story is totally different. However, there are a few things about Yo-Kai Watch's setting and the story I believe The Pokemon Company could learn from.
The people in the Yo-Kai Watch world also feel more real than Pokemon game folks. Everybody, from small children to old people, in the Pokemon world, is obsessed with talking about Pokemon. Virtually everybody you speak to gives you meta-game guidance about Pokemon or Pokemon-related services. They'ren't people; they are an extended tutorial delivery service. The folks in Yo-Kai Watch, on the other hand, have distinct characters and issues you can pick to help them with. Often these difficulties can be solved by summoning or dispelling a Yo-Kai, but they do not know that. They merely understand that their employee is inexplicably late for work, they lost an important toy, or they do not understand how to ask out the object of their affection. In other words, you can see them as actual individuals with interests unrelated to you and your quest. I would love to see more of that from.
Hanke noted that this does not mean the game will automatically receive major characteristics with each update, but Niantic is dedicated to consistently working on and improving the game.
