In any case, I'm neither a stingy or indulgent parent, which usually means that though he may want a plushie, he will not get one and ends up settling for cards.

When I was the child, Japan was clearly not selling video games, but they were writing and creating animation as well as drama. And what little of it got to America I as a little girl even loved. First, there was Ultraman. The monsters were grotesque, Ultraman himself was a hero but ugly too, and it was pure good vs. evil. Creatures came from outer space and Ultraman protected mankind from them. I remember one cute monster that was the size of the small person and was covered with long strands of strange hair (hard to describe). But even that creature, though likable, was pretty nasty. My generation is pretty much figured that monsters should be ugly. Pokemon looks like they lack monster hormones or something. Just to mention it, there was also Speed Racer (amazing story- who can forget Spridal and Chim Chim- and who was Racer X really?). The Mach 5 was way cool. What little girl would not like that? Ashes can not hold a candlewick to Speed!
As a Mother, I am not too worried about leaving him alone at the Pokemon Center to window shop for himself. This being Japan. Nonetheless, I 'm worried about him getting lost in the enormous crowds. I do confess that after 20 minutes I was pretty much going out of my mind, and said to him point blank, "OK, Jojo, time for us to get a move on," but his look of distress made it clear that physical prodding and succeeding brooding would be what I 'd have needed to survive to get him out of there.
It's thought that women love to shop, and men don't but that equation does not contain kids and hobbyists. Getting my son out of the Pokemon Center, and hoping that he will forget that there is a Pokemon Center, are hopeless prospects. Pokemon is sure a success.
